This crochet pattern is originally designed to be larger, about 35″ × 35″, so to make it around 12″ × 12″, you can simply follow the pattern and stop once it reaches approximately your desired size.

If you are matching the exact crochet gauge, the 12″ size should be around Round 10. However, I feel that ending at Round 10 may be a little small to fully show the beauty of the colorful 8-segment star design, unless you start the segmented colorwork earlier.

My suggestion is to follow the original colors for Rounds 1–3, use dark grey for Round 4, then begin the colorful segment design from Round 5 to Round 10. This way, the star pattern will still show nicely in the smaller size.

There are several ways depending on the design but generally replacing some single crochet stitches with chain stitches every other row.
