Learning the basic crochet stitches is just the beginning of the wonderful journey in crochet craft. Let’s take it to the next level and learn how to crochet moss stitch! It is a popular and adaptable stitch pattern that can add beautiful textures to your crochet projects. I promise that you will fall in love with this stitch after learning it.
What is Moss Stitch In Crochet?
The moss stitch crochet pattern is a lovely stitch that creates a dense and woven texture for your crochet fabrics. It is made up of basic crochet stitches (chain and single crochet stitches) and can be worked in rows or rounds. Besides being an easy stitch to learn, it produces a reversible crochet fabric, which makes it perfect for projects that require both sides to look identical.
This stitch may be referred to by different names in crochet patterns. Therefore, if you encounter any of the following stitch names in crochet patterns, they all essentially refer to the same stitch as the crochet moss stitch:
- Granite Stitch
- Linen Stitch
- Seed Stitch
- Woven Stitch
These are the dishcloths I recently crocheted using the moss stitch, and I added personalized colorwork to the design. The crochet moss stitch created a fantastic scrubby texture that works perfectly for cleaning dishes.
Want this pattern? After following this tutorial, you can easily crochet these dishcloths in a single color. You may challenge it by changing colors to create the same colorwork design I did. Let’s give it a try! However, let me know in the comments if you would like a copy of the pattern.

Should you need to learn more about crochet, this complete guide on how to crochet for beginners will come in handy.
How To Crochet Moss Stitch
As a general guide, this moss stitch is crocheted by alternating single crochet and chain stitches and skipping a stitch before repeating this set of stitches.
In the subsequent rows or rounds, the single crochet stitches are worked into the chain spaces created by the chain stitches of the previous row. This one-row repeat pattern is not only easy to crochet but also easy to remember.
Get ready with your crochet hook and yarn, and follow our detailed step-by-step instructions (with photos) for making the crochet moss stitch in rows and rounds.
We also prepared the written crochet pattern for each of them at the end of the tutorial, so you can print them out for your future perusal.
Moss Stitch In Row
Foundation chain
- Connect the yarn to the crochet hook with a slip knot.
- Crochet an even number of chain stitches according to the width of your project, then add one more as a turning chain to begin row 1.
Row 1
a. Many another chain stitch, then single crochet into the 4th chain from the hook.
b. Followed by crocheting another chain stitch.
c. Skip the next stitch on the foundation chain. Then, work a single crochet into the next stitch and make another chain stitch.
d. Repeat the instruction in step c until the end of the row. Finish the row with a single crochet stitch on the last foundation chain stitch.
e. Turn your crochet work to start row 2 after making a turning chain.
Row 2
a. Start by making another chain stitch (you now have 2 chain stitches from the last single crochet). Skip the first single crochet stitch of the previous row and make a single crochet stitch directly into the chain space.
b. Repeat the same pattern by crocheting a chain stitch, then single crochet into the next chain space until you reach the end of the row, ending with a single crochet. Chain one as the tuning chain, and turn your work for the next row.
Subsequent Rows
Repeat Row 2 to make more rows to create the moss stitch texture.
Fasten off once you have crocheted enough rows for your project.

Crocheting Moss Stitch in the Round
Some projects, such as hats, cowls, and bottle holders, require moss stitch to be done in a continuous round pattern to achieve a seamless round shape.
We have prepared 2 types of crocheting moss stitch in rounds, as both are done slightly differently. They also exhibit subtle differences in texture and alignment, as shown in the picture above.
In the crochet moss stitch using the turn method (as seen at the top of the photo), the single crochet stitches appear to be straighter and properly aligned. The bumpier appearance of the single crochet stitches also makes the texture look more rugged and rustic.
On the other hand, when working on the non-turn method (as seen at the bottom of the photo), the stitches appear slanted, and the texture is softer.
Depending on the crochet project’s specification, some require you to turn after each round, while others don’t. If they don’t specify, you can decide which texture you prefer and make necessary adaptations with the following method.
Moss Stitch In Round – The Turn Method
If you understand how to crochet moss stitch in rows, crocheting it in rounds with the turn method is just a similar way. The only difference is that you need to make a slip stitch to join the first and last stitch to form a round. Always remember to turn your work over before crocheting the next round.

Moss Stitch In Round – The No-Turn Method
Unlike the turn method, crocheting moss stitch in rounds without turning follows a two-row repeat pattern. It alternates between rounds that begin with a chain stitch and rounds that begin with a single crochet. Because you don’t turn your work, the chain stitch in row 1 becomes the chain space in row 2. Therefore, when starting row 2, you need to make a single crochet into this chain space.
