This crochet baby blanket project is suitable for crocheters of all skill levels, including beginners. All you need to know are some basic crochet stitches and simple techniques, especially how to change yarn color.
We have included a written crochet pattern at the end of the post. Before jumping to the pattern, it’s important to review the following information. This will help you understand the methodology, including some FAQs that might answer some of your doubts. Be sure to read before jumping.
Blanket Details
This 29-round crochet baby blanket in the star shape measures approximately 35″ from point to point (excluding tassels). It is crocheted from DK or light-worsted cotton yarn using a 4.0 mm hook. Its perfect size, combined with its softness and coziness, makes it an ideal baby blanket.
In addition to being a cute decoration and essential baby item, the soft tassels on the crochet star blanket provide sensory and visual stimulation for babies during their early days. These tassels also help babies develop their motor skills and hand-eye coordination later on.
Crochet Supplies
The crochet supplies are quite simple, and you can begin the project with just a few items shown below:
- Yarn
- This baby blanket uses slightly more than 4 balls (100 g/ball) of light-worsted or DK cotton yarn.
- You need yarns in 5 colors:
Main – White, Yellow, Blue, Grey
Supplement – Dark Grey
- Crochet Hook
- 4.0 mm hook size for light-worsted yarn. If you use other yarn weights, adjust your hook size accordingly.
- Other tools
- Scissors, tapestry needle (or yarn needle), your preferred blocking tools.
With this yarn and crochet hook, the obtained crochet gauge is 16 stitches x 9 rows for a 4″ swatch and crochet in double crochet stitches. The crochet gauge value is after blocking.
How To Crochet A Tassel Star Blanket
Before you begin to crochet the blanket, make a total of 8 tassels, that’s 2 tassels for each of the 4 main yarn colors.
Each tassel is approximately 3.5 inches long. To achieve this length and fullness, wrap the yarn around a 4-inch cardboard 40 times. Secure the top and tie the neck of the tassel. If you need visual guidance on how to make a yarn tassel, watch this video on the process.
After that, begin crocheting the center of the star blanket. You may get the full written pattern below.
Change yarn and crochet according to the written pattern for each round until you reach Round 7.
Note that we turn the work after each round for this crochet pattern.
The panel colorwork begins at Round 8. Before continuing crocheting it, prepare your yarn so you have enough yarn to work on each panel, you will need to prepare the following:
- White – 1 large and 2 small
- Pastel Blue – 2 large
- Yellow – 2 large
- Light Grey – 2 large
Large – 50% of your total yarn
Small – 25% of your total yarn
Read the FAQ section to learn how to prepare your yarn if it comes in a single large ball for each color.
Crochet each round accordingly and change the yarn when prompted. Note that this colorwork project does not need to carry yarn.
I finished all my yarns by Round 29. After finishing, weave all yarn ends into the crochet stitches to hide them.
Block the baby blanket using your preferred method. I personally prefer wet blocking. Although wet blocking takes longer to dry, the wait is worthwhile. Since the blanket is washable, wet blocking ensures that it retains its intended size and shape after future washes.
Once the baby blanket has completed the blocking steps, attach the 8 tassels that you made earlier.
Weave in the yarn ends into the tassel to hide them.
Here is the completed blanket. You are welcome to customize it according to your preferences, whether it’s the color theme, size, or even the tassels. All options are customizable.
FAQs On Star Blanket Crochet Pattern
1. What is the best yarn to crochet for a blanket?
The best yarn for a crochet blanket depends on its intended use and desired feel. Soft and washable yarns like acrylic or cotton are best for baby blankets. If warmth is a priority, wool or wool blends are great choices. It’s important to ensure that the yarn is comfortable against the skin and suitable for the recipient.
2. What size should my crochet baby blanket be?
Different blankets come in various sizes depending on how they are meant to be used. Here are some standard sizes for babies:
– Lovey Blanket: 12″ x 12″
– Receiving Blanket: 30″ x 30″
– Crib Blanket: 30″ x 36″
– Stroller Blanket: 30″ x 40″
Please note that these sizes are general guidelines. You can always adjust them according to your personal preference.
3. Can I crochet this star blanket larger?
If you would like to make a larger blanket, there are 2 ways of doing it.
option 1:
Simply continue to crochet more rounds. The blanket pattern is written so that you can do infinite rounds until you are happy with the size. This will need more yarn, so remember to purchase enough for the larger project.
Option 2:
You can use a bulkier yarn, such as worsted weight or chunky blanket yarn. Learn more about yarn weight and how it affects your crochet projects. Also, remember to adjust your crochet hook according to your new yarn weight so you can crochet comfortably in the correct tension.
4. How to prepare the yarn for each panel of the star?
If you need to crochet the same color twice at different spots in a round, you will need to use two separate yarn balls to avoid carrying the yarn along. Although it’s possible to use two ends from a single ball, we do not recommend this method for this blanket project, as it can cause tangling when working with four colors.
This is how I split the yarn into 2 equal parts, though not very precise, but good enough for this project.
1. Weigh and record the weight of the yarn for each color and divide it into 2.
2. Start rolling up the yarn into a new ball until both balls weigh equally.
3. Repeat for all colors.
4. Repeat the process with one of the white yarn to create two smaller balls, which will be used for the beginning and ending of the round.
5. What blocking technique should I use?
Depending on your yarn material and the size of your crochet blanket, there are several ways to block your completed:
– Wet block
– Steam block
– Spray block
I personally like wet blocking since this blanket is washable. Wet blocking ensures better shape retention in future washes.

Notes:
1. Make 8 tassels with 2 for each color. My tassel is about 3.5" long, and I have wrapped the yarn 40 times on a 4" cardboard to make it. You may watch this video on how to make a yarn tassel.
2. After crocheting Round 6, split the balance 100g yarn ball of White, Pastel Blue, Yellow, and Light Grey into 2 equal weights and roll them up into yarn balls before continuing to crochet. Split 1 of the White yarn balls into half again.
3. ch 2 at the beginning of a round, not 3. This makes the join less visible.
4. Always turn your crochet work after each round.
5. Each round after round 1 ends with an hdc stitch that joins the round. This hdc stitch is counted as ch2. The space it creates is equivalent to ch2sp.
Written Crochet Pattern:
With Yellow yarn, make a Magic Ring (MR):
Round 1: ch2 (counts as first dc throughout pattern), work 15 dc in ring. Join with sl st to the top of ch2 at the beginning of the round. Turn. fo.
With Grey yarn:
Round 2: ch2, *dc in next st, (dc, ch2, dc) in next st. Repeat from * around, ending with dc in the base of the beginning stitch. Join with hdc to the top of ch2 at the beginning of the round (join in this manner throughout the pattern after this round). Turn. fo.
With White yarn:
Round 3: ch2, dc into hdcsp, *work (2dc, ch2, 2dc) in next ch2sp. Repeat from * around, ending with 2dc in the hdcsp at the beginning of the round. Join with hdc. Turn. fo.
With Blue yarn:
Round 4: ch2, dc into hdcsp, *dc in next st, sk 2 sts, dc in next st, work (2dc, ch2, 2dc) in next ch2sp. Repeat from * around, ending with 2dc in the hdcsp at the beginning of the round. Join with hdc. Turn. fo
With Dark Grey yarn:
Round 5: ch2, dc into hdcsp, *dc in each of next 2 sts, sk 2 sts, dc in each of next 2 sts, work (2dc, ch2, 2dc) in next ch2sp. Repeat from * around, ending with 2dc in the hdcsp at the beginning of the round. Join with hdc. Turn.
Round 6: ch2, dc into hdcsp, *dc in each of next 3 sts, sk 2 sts, dc in each of next 3 sts, work (2dc, ch2, 2dc) in next ch2sp. Repeat from * around, ending with 2dc in the hdcsp at the beginning of the round. Join with hdc. Turn. fo
Colorwork begins here to create different colors for each panel of the star blanket. Work the following pattern with two balls each of Pastel Blue, Yellow, and Light Grey yarn and three balls of White yarn (one large and two small).
Round 7:
Begin with a small white yarn ball, ch2, dc into hdcsp, dc in each of next 4 sts.
Change yarn to Pastel Blue, *sk 2 sts, dc in each of next 4 sts, work (2dc, ch2, 2dc) in next ch2sp, dc in each of next 4 sts.*
Change yarn to Yellow and repeat from * to *.
Change yarn to Light Grey and repeat from * to *.
Change yarn to large White yarn ball and repeat from * to *.
Repeat another cycle of colorwork from Pastel Blue to Yellow to Light Grey.
End the round with the small White yarn ball, sk 2 sts, dc in each of next 4 sts, 2dc in the hdcsp at the beginning of the round. Join with hdc. Turn.
From this round forward, change to the next color of yarn just before the "sk 2 sts" instruction to create 8 colorwork panels.
Round 8: ch2, dc into hdcsp, *dc in each of next 5 sts, sk 2 sts, dc in each of next 5 sts, work (2dc, ch2, 2dc) in next ch2sp. Repeat from * around, ending with 2dc in the hdcsp at the beginning of the round. Join with hdc. Turn.
Round 9 - 29: Continue working in rounds to grow the star blanket larger with the number of dc increasing in each round between the "ch2sp" and the "sk 2 sts".
Feel free to end your crochet once you have reached the desired dimensions for your blanket.
Lay flat and weave in all yarn ends.
Block gently.
Fasten the tassels at the ch2sp. Hide yarn ends.
